Anthony Martial’s Manchester United career had looked as good as over. He had struggled in the 2020/21 season and that bad run of form continued in the previous campaign as well, and he was sent on loan to Sevilla, where he did not impress either. Thus, at one point of time, it had looked almost certain that he would be gone from the club this summer.

That did not happen though. Instead, it looks like Martial has caught a second wind in his Manchester United career under the management of Erik ten Hag.

Now, it remains to be seen if the Frenchman can make the most of this opportunity. When he arrived at the club, he was viewed as a future Ballon d’Or contender. These days, he is viewed by most people as barely an afterthought. Let’s see if Martial can change that.

Martial was recently talking about the best player that he has played with, and ended up picking Wayne Rooney over Cristiano Ronaldo. As reported by Metro, he told France Football:

"‘We have spoken about being genuine and so I can speak about Wayne Rooney. He’s the best player I have played with.‘He’s always playing for the team, always at 100%, no fuss. A monster. And a model as a footballer.’"

To be very honest, that is a bit of surprising choice to say the least. Martial played with Rooney towards the tail end of his Manchester United career and by that point of time, the Englishman was nowhere near his prime.

In fact, a lot of fans feel that Rooney peaked to early as a player and by the time he turned 30, he was not anywhere near his best anymore.

Even then, Rooney was clearly able to make an impression on Martial, who was trying to find his feet at Manchester United at that point of time, after a big move from AS Monaco.

In many ways, both had similar early careers, teen prodigies who joined Manchester United. Unfortunately, Martial’s career has never hit the heights of Rooney.
