Manchester United were linked with a long list of players over the course of the summer transfer window and for a long while, it was looking like the Red Devils were having a terrible time convincing players to join the club. But ultimately, late moves for Casemiro and Antony meant that their transfer window went from disappointing to fantastic in a very short span of time.

Now, it remains to be seen if Erik ten Hag’s side can deliver on the pitch. They have certainly shown signs of life lately, with three wins on the trot. It is hard to remember the last time they had done that.

Thus, hopes and expectations have been raised amongst the fans and now, it looks like Manchester United are genuine challengers for the top four.

There is one player that they had been heavily linked with this summer, but the move did not end up happening. And Cody Gakpo has confirmed of Manchester United’s interest. As reported by 90min, the PSV Eindhoven star told club media:

"“At the start of the window, United registered their interest but not very strongly, so I was waiting for a bit, and then the end was approaching and the signals became more positive. I started thinking it could fall that way eventually.“The interest faded last week, so the whole window I worked towards that and then it faded. So then I was watching last week, thinking ‘what is the right thing to do?’.“I feel at home here, in my own city. Everyone knows how I feel, but you have to look at all your options, but in the end I know I made the right choice.”"

Gakpo confirms of Manchester United’s interest in him

It is not hard to see why Manchester United might have been interested in someone like Gakpo. His numbers in the Eredivisie are superb, even better than that of Antony.

On top of that, he has all the physical attributes required to be a major success in the Premier League. But ultimately, he did not end up getting a move this summer.

Manchester United have gone for Antony instead and it is safe to say that it has the potential to be a tremendous signing. The Brazilian has already proven himself at the domestic and European level, and is someone that Ten Hag knows well from their time together at Ajax. Thus, it is a win-win move for the Red Devils and one that could prove to be a long-term success.
