Manchester United pulled off their signing of the summer recently, as they brought in five-time Champions League winner, Casemiro, from Real Madrid in a deal that could rise up to £70 million with add-ons. It goes without saying that the Brazilian will add a solidity to the Red Devils’ midfield that has been missing for years.

Casemiro was a huge part of Real Madrid winning four of the last seven Champions League titles. It was following his introduction into the team that Los Blancos were able to establish themselves in Europe once again. Now, it remains to be seen if he can bring that kind of quality to the Manchester United midfield as well.

The move did come as a surprise to most fans without a doubt, as Manchester United had been chasing the signature of Frenkie de Jong all summer, in an attempt to reunite him with Erik ten Hag. But the Dutch midfielder does not seem to be keen on leaving Barcelona.

There have been some rumours that the Red Devils could still make a move and try to partner him with Casemiro in the middle of the park, in what would be arguably the best midfield duo in Europe. But as reported by The Athletic (via Caught Offside), Manchester United’s pursuit of the Barcelona midfielder is considered done. They have ended their chase.

On paper, De Jong joining Manchester United this summer would have made a lot of sense. His development has stagnated at Barcelona and at Old Trafford, he would get the chance to play under the management of Ten Hag, who had brought the best out of him at Ajax.

At the same time though, it is not hard to see why De Jong might be reluctant on joining Manchester United.

The club are in the Europa League this season and will face an uphill struggle to finish in the top four once again, with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur improving immensely.
