Manchester United’s start to the season has been a bit of a disaster to say the least. They lost 2-1 at home in their opening game against Brighton & Hove Albion, and were completely outplayed by Graham Potter’s side. Then they went away to Brentford and were handed a resounding 4-0 defeat by the Bees.

It is safe to say that Erik ten Hag would not have expected his run at Manchester United to start in this fashion and things are only getting tougher. Their next game is against Liverpool, who will be eager to get a win on the board, after drawing their first two games of the Premier League campaign.

Thus, it is safe to say that Ten Hag will have to make a few adjustments to his team from the first two games, and Wayne Rooney feels that Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford should be dropped. He also believes that Manchester United should let the Portuguese superstar go.

As reported by Metro, Rooney wrote in his column in The Times:

"‘I wouldn’t play Cristiano Ronaldo, and I wouldn’t play Marcus Rashford.‘If I was in Ten Hag’s position my main concern would be getting energy on the pitch, and United’s failure to recruit a number nine means they relied on Ronaldo against Brentford, even though he hadn’t trained a lot with the team. He looked like he needs time to get match fit.‘He has also let it be known that he wants to leave the club. I don’t know his reasons but, as I wrote in my last column, I’d let him.‘He’s a great player and will always score goals but the task for Ten Hag is to produce a team that can compete for the title in three or four years’ time. That means rebuilding with younger players.’"

Rooney tells Manchester United to let Ronaldo leave

Ronaldo is believed to be keen on leaving Manchester United this summer in search of a club where he will still be competing in the Champions League.

Unfortunately for him, as the summer transfer window quickly heads towards a close, it is hard to see too many teams on the horizon who have a need for or would sign Ronaldo.

At 37 years of age, he is no longer the player that he once was, although he can still find the back of the net on his day. Also, one has to point out the fact that the last two teams he has joined, Juventus and Manchester United, have seemed to take a step back following his arrival.

On the other hand, Rashford has struggled to produce good performances for a long time, and is no longer the sure shot starter that he was a few years back.
