Manchester United have been chasing the signature of Frenkie de Jong for the entire summer till now. The Dutch midfielder was a particular standout during his time at Ajax under Erik ten Hag, and the Red Devils seem keen to reunite the two, this time at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, the transfer saga has dragged on and on, and the club must now start looking towards alternative targets, with just a few weeks left in the window.

It is safe to say that someone like De Jong would probably be a great signing for the club. But at the same time, the player himself is not believed to be keen on switching Camp Nou for Old Trafford.

In fact, while staying at Barcelona is believed to be his priority, it looks like he would even prefer a move to Chelsea over Manchester United.

As tweeted out by Ben Jacobs, there is a private acceptance at Manchester United that a De Jong transfer won’t happen as long as Chelsea push:

Manchester United handed massive De Jong transfer blow

Ten Hag already knows how to get the best out of De Jong. He was a key part of the Ajax team that reached the Champions League semi-finals a few years back.

Thus, if Manchester United were able to sign De Jong, he might the type of player that Ten Hag might end up building his team around. But with a move looking less and less unlikely as the saga drags on, the Red Devils must keep their eyes on other midfielders as well.

Midfield is an area of urgent need for Manchester United at this point of time. It has been considered a weakness in the team for years and this summer, they have seen several key players leave as well in the middle of the park, like Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata.

Thus, Manchester United need to sign a midfielder, no matter what ends up happening in the De Jong transfer saga.
