The transfer saga involving Frenkie de Jong is getting frustrating for Manchester United fans. The Red Devils appear to have been chasing the signature of the Barcelona star since the start of the window, but till now, nothing has materialised. Rumours suggest that the player himself is keen to remain at Camp Nou and unsure about moving to Old Trafford, despite the presence of former Ajax manager, Erik ten Hag, there.

Barcelona seem to be very open to the idea of De Jong leaving though, as it is believed that they will need a big exit in order to balance their books and register some of their new signings.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for De Jong at Barcelona, but till now, it does not seem like Manchester United have given up on their chances of signing the Dutchman this summer.

For now, it looks like things are up in the air and even Xavi has admitted that he is not sure whether De Jong is going to stay or not. As reported by SPORT, the Barcelona manager said:

"“I don’t know if he’s going to stay.“There’s still time and a lot of things can still happen. At the moment he’s part of the team, like everyone else.”"

Xavi makes De Jong admission amid links with Manchester United

If Manchester United are able to sign De Jong, it has the potential to be a major coup on the part of the club. Ten Hag already knows how to get the best out of the Dutch international and he is the type of player the manager might look to build his team around.

At the same time though, there will be some question marks around De Jong as well. At the end of the day, his development has pretty much stagnated at Barcelona over the past few years and one has to question whether the intensity of the Premier League would suit him.

The biggest problem at the moment though is that this transfer saga is dragging on and Manchester United cannot afford to wait much longer. Midfield is an area of immediate need for the Red Devils and as a result, they are being linked with alternative targets already.
