The start of the Premier League season is not far away and till now, Manchester United do not seem to be anywhere near their best. The early pre-season displays had raised a lot of expectations but a draw against Aston Villa and a defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid, have burst the balloon of hype that had built over the past several weeks.

The fact of the matter is that this is a team that has not won a single trophy in five seasons now and on top of that, they have seen a lot of key players leave this summer as well.

As a result, it is pretty clear that Erik ten Hag has his work cut out for him and this is not going to be an easy rebuild by any stretch of the imagination. The Dutch manager must be given time to succeed.

There is some good news for Manchester United fans though as it has been confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo will be returning to the fold, after missing the majority of pre-season. As reported by Manchester Evening News, speaking after the defeat to Atletico Madrid, Ten Hag said:

"“Tomorrow he will be in the squad. We’ll see how long he can play.”"

Ten Hag confirms Manchester United star’s return

Manchester United have another pre-season friendly coming up, against Rayo Vallecano, and it will be interesting to see how Ronaldo does on the day.

While he has not taken part in pre-season with the club till now, the Portuguese superstar always remains fit and it should not be a major issue for him.

The most interesting thing about Ronaldo right now is his future. It is believed that he wants to leave Manchester United this summer, in search of Champions League. While many fans will view him returning to pre-season as a sign that he will stay on, that might not be the case. He had started the previous campaign with Juventus as well.
