When Manchester United signed Cristiano Ronaldo in a blockbuster move from Juventus last summer, it was believed to be the final piece of the puzzle that would turn them back into Premier League and European contenders once again. Almost a year on, it is safe to say that the Portuguese superstar’s return to the Theatre of Dreams has not quite worked out.

The club failed to win a single piece of silverware for the fifth straight season and failed to even qualify for the Champions League, as they finished sixth in the Premier League table.

Thus, rumours have surrounded the future of Ronaldo, who has not taken part in Manchester United’s pre-season till now.

And as reported by The Sun, Ronaldo has jetted into Manchester to personally tell Manchester United that he wants to leave immediately. The Portuguese captain does not intend to play in the Europa League.

Ronaldo leaving would be a massive blow for Manchester United. Even though questions where asked about him, he was still the club’s most consistent goalscorer in the previous campaign. And the Red Devils do not seem to have a replacement for him in their squad right now, with Edinson Cavani also having left in the summer.

On the other hand, one has to question what Ronaldo leaving Manchester United in this manner will mean for his legacy at the club in the eyes of the supporters, who did welcome him back with open arms last season.

Ronaldo had been linked with moves to clubs like Bayern Munich, PSG and even Chelsea, but none of them seem to have led anywhere. Recently, he has been linked with a surprising move to Atletico Madrid, but then, that move would raise questions about his legacy with Real Madrid.
