Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at Manchester United has been up in the air in recent times. The rumours have suggested that the Portuguese legend wants to leave the club as he wants to continue playing Champions League football. He has been linked with the likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, but nothing has materialised till now.

Ronaldo is yet to feature for Manchester United in pre-season though. But on the part of the Red Devils, there seems to be a reluctance to let him leave, as they do not have any reliable goalscorers in their ranks at the moment.

Now though, it looks like Manchester United are trying to come up with an innovative solution to the situation.

As reported by the Mirror, Manchester United are ready to let Ronaldo leave the club this summer but only on loan. And in return they want the Portuguese legend to trigger a one-year option clause to extend his contract with the Red Devils, so he can return to Old Trafford next summer. Atletico Madrid are believed to hold an interest in him.

It remains to be seen if things head anywhere from here. If Ronaldo does end up leaving the club, the Red Devils will certainly need to bring in a replacement for him, although Anthony Martial’s form in pre-season has certainly raised some hopes that he could be the one to lead the line in Erik ten Hag’s system.

A potential move to Atletico Madrid does raise questions about Ronaldo’s legacy though, as he would be joining the rivals of Real Madrid, the club where he went from a superstar to one of the greatest of all-time.

While it is not hard to understand why he might be keen to play Champions League football, what long-term effect would such a move end up having on his legacy.
