Edinson Cavani’s time at Manchester United was a rollercoaster ride. He had arrived on a free transfer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain and his start at Old Trafford was nothing special, as he struggled with injury problems. The Uruguayan would come into his own in the second half of the 2020/21 campaign though.

During that period of time, Cavani was one of the best strikers in the entire Premier League and it convinced Manchester United to hand him an extension.

Things did not go his way last season though. First, the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo meant that he was no longer the focal point of Manchester United’s attack. And secondly, he struggled for both form and fitness throughout the campaign.

Thus, it was no surprise that he left Manchester United at the end of last season when his contract ran out and now, it looks like Cavani could be headed to Spain, even though a lot of rumours had linked him with a return to South America.

As reported by Marca, Villarreal have reached an agreement in principle with Cavani. They must let go of players first before the deal can completed though and Paco Alcacer is the one who could be on his way out.

It remains to be seen how things unfold. Villarreal made a deep run into the Champions League last season, surprisingly managing to reach the semi-finals. But they have not qualified for Europe’s elite competition this time around. Could a 35-year-old Cavani prove to be a good addition for the Yellow Submarine?

Coming back to Manchester United, the Red Devils could do with another addition up front as well, although Anthony Martial’s magnificent form in pre-season has raised hopes that he could be the solution to their problems.
