Manchester United have been linked with Frenkie de Jong for a long time now but the long-running transfer saga is yet to reach its conclusion. There have been conflicting reports in the media with some suggesting that the Dutch midfielder’s priority is to remain at Barcelona while others have suggested that a move is being held up as a result of an issue over unpaid wages.

The situation is far from ideal for Manchester United though, as they look to rebuild their squad this summer.

The club have already brought in Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord and Lisandro Martinez from Ajax, as their summer transfer plans have picked up pace in recent weeks after a slow start to things. Some fans are worried though that the club cannot continue to chase De Jong for much longer and should turn their attention towards other players if the saga drags on.

But as reported by the Mirror, Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag, will wait until the final day of the transfer window to land top midfield target, De Jong. He has no intention of giving up on his pursuit of the Dutch international.

Ten Hag makes bold Manchester United transfer decision

It is safe to say that the decision to wait on De Jong is a bold one on the part of Ten Hag, simply because of the fact that there is no guarantee that the player will ultimately end up at Old Trafford.

On the other hand, there is no hiding from the fact that Manchester United are in urgent need of midfielders this summer.

Midfield had already been viewed as an area of weakness for the club and on top of that, the likes of Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic have left as free agents to weaken the middle of the park even further.
