Manchester United are a club in need of reinforcements all over the pitch. Till now, they have only managed to sign left-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord while a deal for Lisandro Martinez of Ajax also seems to be on the verge of being completed. Thus, while the start to the Erik ten Hag era has been slow, the Red Devils appear to be starting to pick up pace now.

One position that the club might look to improve in further is right-back. There were high hopes from Aaron Wan-Bissaka but he just has not been able to improve his game over the past few years and might not be someone who can start regularly for Manchester United.

Diogo Dalot has shown signs of improvement and featured much more often in recent times but he needs some competition. And it looks like the Red Devils have a French international in their sights to provide that.

As reported by Evening Standard, Manchester United are ready to rival Chelsea for Lens star, Jonathan Clauss. He is believed to be valued at a transfer fee around £8 million.

Manchester United set to rival Chelsea in race to sign French right-back

Both Manchester United and Chelsea find themselves in similar situations this summer. Both clubs need a bit of a squad overhaul and it looks like the Premier League giants have their eyes on Clauss.

Clauss enjoyed a breakout campaign in Ligue 1 last time around despite the fact that he is 29 years of age. He is in the French national team picture now though and looks to be a man in demand this summer.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Clauss scored 5 goals and provided 11 assists in 37 Ligue 1 appearances last season.

Clauss is a very versatile player who can play as a right-back, wing-back, in midfield or on the wings, but naturally, he has to be considered a right wing-back, which immediately would make him a better fit for Chelsea than Manchester United.
