With Erik ten Hag arriving as the new Manchester United manager and the club in need of a serious rebuild, it is no surprise that the Red Devils have been linked with a number of players that Ten Hag has managed in the past. One of the top names on that list is that of current FC Barcelona midfielder, Frenkie de Jong.

De Jong played a key role in Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals a few years back under the management of Ten Hag. His career has not taken off like it was expected to since moving to Barcelona.

The Dutchman’s development has stalled and with players like Pedri and Gavi coming through the ranks at Barcelona, one has to wonder what kind of a role De Jong will have in the future at Camp Nou. Thus on paper, a move to Manchester United and reuniting with Ten Hag makes a lot of sense.

But as reported by SPORT, De Jong is very clear that the option of going to Manchester United is totally ruled out.

Manchester United suffer incredible blow in quest to sign De Jong from Barcelona

This is a major blow for Manchester United without a shadow of a doubt. While Barcelona do not seem to be completely against the idea of letting De Jong go, it looks like the player himself has very little interest in swapping Camp Nou for Old Trafford.

On the other hand, Chelsea have also been linked with De Jong in recent days as the Blues are need of a squad rebuild of their own this summer after an underwhelming 2021/22 season when many people expected them to push Manchester City and Liverpool in the title race.

As things stand, Manchester United’s chances of signing De Jong do not seem great. Let’s see if the situation changes in the coming months.
