Manchester United could do with a new striker this summer. Cristiano Ronaldo is 37 years of age and although he had a decent individual season, there are question marks about whether the team were better before his arrival. On the other hand, Edinson Cavani is set to leave on a free transfer. The future of Anthony Martial is pretty much up in the air and Marcus Rashford has been very disappointing this season.

Thus, it would not be a massive surprise if Erik ten Hag tries to bring in a striker in the summer transfer window, as he looks to take the club back to the top of English football once again.

One of the players that the Red Devils have been heavily linked with in recent times is Darwin Nunez, who has had a breakout season, catching the eyes of clubs all around Europe. Liverpool are also interested in him though and have handed Manchester United a blow in the transfer race.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Liverpool are ready to smash their transfer record to sign Nunez. It is also believed that the striker himself is keen on a move to Anfield. It could take a transfer fee around £85 million to convince Benfica to let him go.

Manchester United handed transfer blow in Nunez race by Liverpool

At this point of time, it is not hard to see why Nunez would prefer a move to Liverpool over Manchester United.

The Red Devils have struggled ever since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. On the other hand, Jurgen Klopp’s side might be the best team in the world right now. Someone like Nunez could be an exceptional signing for either although Manchester United definitely need it more.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Nunez has scored 34 goals and provided 4 assists in 41 appearances for Benfica during 2021/22 campaign. And those include goals against the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Ajax, who were then managed by Ten Hag.
