Manchester United’s squad is set to undergo an overhaul over the course of the summer. The Red Devils have a new manager in place in the form of Erik ten Hag, who will surely be looking to leave his own mark at the club and take them back to the top of English football, at task that managers like David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick have failed at till now.
Thus, Ten Hag has his task cut out for him and expect there to be several incomings and outgoings at Old Trafford over the coming weeks and months.
One player who is already confirmed to be leaving the club is Nemanja Matic. He has been an important member of the squad since his arrival in 2017 but was no longer a first-team regular in recent years. Thus, a move away makes sense for all parties at the moment.
And it appears that Matic is closing in on a move to AS Roma. Fabrizio Romano tweeted out that that the Italian club are already planning for his medical tests and and an agreement has been reached on a one-year deal with the option to extend it for a further season:
Manchester United star ready to join Mourinho at AS Roma
Matic and Mourinho share a long history together, and the midfielder has played under the management of the Portuguese legend at both Chelsea and Manchester United in the past, and now seems to be on the verge of adding the name of AS Roma to that list.
Mourinho has faced some struggles in recent years, struggling at both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, but has brought things back on track at AS Roma, guiding the to the UEFA Europa Conference League title.
A move to the relatively slower style of football of the Serie A could be a great move for Matic right now.
