Manchester United are expected to make some major additions in the summer transfer window. The club are in need of a squad rebuild, as they have failed to win a single trophy in five seasons now and could not even finish in a Champions League qualifying spot. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was shown the exit door in the middle of the campaign but Ralf Rangnick could not turn things around either after arriving as interim manager.

Erik ten Hag is now going to sit on the managerial hot seat at Old Trafford and fans will be hoping that that he is the one to finally take the club back to the top.

He has an impressive track record, having re-established Ajax as the dominant team in the Netherlands once again during his time there. The Dutch giants also reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals a few years back under his management, a stage that Manchester United have not been able to reach in a long time.

Frenkie de Jong is a player that Manchester United have been heavily linked with in recent times but it looks like Darwin Nunez is someone that the club could be close to signing. As reported by GIVEMESPORT, journalist Dean Jones said:

"“One source described this deal to United to me as being ‘extremely close’.“They consider Atletico Madrid as their main rivals to sign him, from what I hear, but obviously, loads around Europe are looking. If Darwin does move to Old Trafford, it will be a brilliant signing for the Ten Hag era.”"

Manchester United reportedly close to deal for the striker

Nunez has enjoyed a breakout season with Benfica. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 34 goals and provided 4 assists in 41 appearances during the course of the 2021/22 campaign.

He stepped up to the plate on the biggest occasions as well, and has goals to his name against clubs like Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Ajax, who Ten Hag was managing at that point of time.

Manchester United need to bring in a new striker this summer with Edinson Cavani set to leave and question marks over whether Cristiano Ronaldo is the man to lead this team into the future. If they can sign someone like Nunez, it would be a major coup on their part.
