One would expect several new players to arrive at Manchester United over the course of the summer as Erik ten Hag looks to rebuild the squad at Old Trafford. He did a wonderful job at Ajax, re-establishing them as the best team in the Netherlands and making great progress in Europe as well, but it is expected to be a whole different ball game at the Theatre of Dreams.

Firstly, this is a team that has not won a single trophy in five years now. Secondly, they look set to lose several key players over the summer. The latter could be viewed as an opportunity as well though, to rebuild the squad in his own vision.

As reported by the Mirror, Ten Hag has told Manchester United to make signing Ajax’s Jurrien Timber and Benfica’s Darwin Nunez a priority.

Ten Hag will know Timber very well, having coached him at Ajax. On the other hand, he will be very aware of Nunez’s qualities as well, as Benfica knocked the Dutch manager’s former side out of the Champions League in the 2021/22 season.

Ten Hag tells Manchester United to sign brilliant duo

Timber is believed to be available for a transfer fee around £35 million. On the other hand, it might take a figure around £80 million for Benfica to part ways with Nunez.

Thus, if Manchester United are able to complete both deals this summer, it could end up costing them around £115 million in transfer fees. Upon that, there are several other positions in the squad needing of reinforcements as well.

Thus, it will be very interesting to see how the club approach the summer transfer window. Signing Timber might be a very good idea on the part of the club but making a move for Nunez might be a bit more questionable, not because of the player’s quality but because of the transfer fee it would take to sign him and the number of other clubs also in the race.
