Manchester United could be looking to sign a new centre-back this summer. When they had brought in Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, it had been seen as a huge move on the part of the Red Devils and many felt that it would solve their defensive issues, turning them into one of the most formidable backlines in the Premier League. It is safe to say that that has not happened till now.

Varane himself has faced his fair share of troubles with both form and injury. On the other hand, those around him have struggled to rediscover their form from last season.

Harry Maguire has come under a lot of criticism, and others have not stepped up to the plate to take his place in the starting XI either. Thus, it would not be any surprise if a new centre-back is on top of Erik ten Hag’s summer wish list, as he looks to rebuild the squad and it looks like he has found his dream target.

As reported by Marca, Ten Hag wants a ball-playing centre-back and Pau Torres fits perfectly into this. The Dutch manager wants the Villarreal defender at all costs. Manchester United are believed to be willing to offer a €50 million transfer fee for him.

Torres had been heavily linked with Manchester United last summer as well, before they got a deal done to sign Varane from Real Madrid.

Now, it looks like the Red Devils could return for Torres. And this time around, Villarreal might have a tougher time keeping hold of him.

Villarreal enjoyed a brilliant season in Europe, reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. But their form in La Liga was not good at all and they finished the campaign at 7th, missing out on both the Champions League and the Europa League qualifying spots.

Thus, if Manchester United come in with a big offer for Torres, the Spanish club might definitely have to consider parting ways with Torres.

If the club are able to sign Torres, one has to wonder what it would mean for the future of the likes of Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and a few more centre-backs already at Old Trafford.
