Manchester United are set to undergo a lot of changes both on and off the pitch this summer as it is clear that the Red Devils need an overhaul. The club have not won a single piece of silverware for the last five seasons, something that would have been unthinkable during the Sir Alex Ferguson era but that is just the reality of the situation.
Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal, David Moyes, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick have all failed to guide the club back to the top of the English footballing pyramid. Now, it is Erik ten Hag’s turn to get his opportunity.
The Dutchman has done an incredible job at Ajax, both in domestic competitions and in Europe, and has already been confirmed as the next permanent Manchester United manager. It is safe to say that he will have his work cut out for him.
It will be very important that Manchester United surround him with the right team as well. And as tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren will be part of the coaching staff.
McClaren is set to complete Manchester United return
McClaren was an assistant to Sir Alex at Manchester United for a while and had earned a reputation for being one of the best tactical coaches in the country during that period.
He would later move on to management himself but did not manage to achieve as much success as many would have predicted. He did have two major achievements though, winning the League Cup with Middlesbrough and winning the Eredivisie with Twente.
But it is safe to say that his managerial career has fizzled out by now. His last role was with Queens Park Rangers in 2019.
Thus, a return to Manchester United in a coaching role makes a lot of sense for McClaren. On the other hand, Ten Hag will have someone in his team who already knows the club and what it takes to be successful at Old Trafford.
