Manchester United are expected to undergo a major summer squad overhaul, with Erik ten Hag arriving as the new permanent manager of the club. The Dutchman has done a fantastic job at Ajax and will surely want to ring in the changes at Old Trafford, after the Red Devils are set to finish without a single piece of silverware for the fifth straight season.

Thus, do not be surprised by major incomings and outgoings at the club over the summer. And one player who has been linked with Manchester United heavily since the announcement of Ten Hag as their next permanent manager is Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.

It was under the management of Ten Hag that De Jong first made a name for himself, as Ajax reached the semi-finals of the Champions League a few years back. At that point, he was believed to be on his way to becoming one of the best midfielders in Europe and Barcelona wasted no time in signing him.

Things have not quite gone as expected for De Jong since then as he has failed to fulfil his potential till now at Barcelona. As a result, it is not hard to see why a reunion with Ten Hag at Manchester United might make sense. There appears to be an update on the situation though.

Major update on the situation involving De Jong, Manchester United and Barcelona

As tweeted out by Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United is trying everything to get De Jong in the summer, Ten Hag wants him and talks have taken place. But Xavi will not let him go.

Despite his up and down performances for Barcelona, it looks like De Jong is still viewed as a very important member of Xavi’s squad and as a result, the Spaniard is keen to keep him at Camp Nou.

Barcelona’s financial situation could make things interesting though and it might be a mistake on the part of Manchester United to give up hopes of signing him completely.

It is expected to take a significant transfer fee if Manchester United are to bring De Jong to Old Trafford, with rumours placing it anything between €60 million to €100 million.
