With Erik ten Hag set to take over as Manchester United manager this summer, rumours involving the Red Devils and Frenkie de Jong have picked up significant pace recently. It does make a lot of sense as well as the club need to rebuild their midfield, especially with the likes of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic expected to head for the exit door.

De Jong had made a name for himself at Ajax under the management of Ten Hag before getting a huge move to Barcelona. That has not quite worked out though as he has not developed into the superstar that he was expected to be, even though a lot of that might very well be down to the club’s struggles.

De Jong remains a very good player though and is someone that Ten Hag knows how to get the best out of. And now, it looks like Manchester United’s chances of signing the Netherlands international from Barcelona have been handed a major boost.

As reported by the Mirror, De Jong has been given the green light to join Manchester United from Barcelona by Xavi.

There are a couple of reasons why Barcelona might be willing to let De Jong. Firstly, they have an incredible core of young midfielders at the club at the moment and while the Dutch international remains an important part, he is not an undroppable. As mentioned earlier, he has not reached the potential he had shown earlier on in his career.

Secondly, Barcelona could do with the significant transfer fee that one would expect them to receive for parting ways with De Jong. If rumours are to be believed then it would take a figure between €60 million and €100 million to sign the midfielder.

Manchester United do need to rebuild the squad after finishing trophyless for five straight seasons. Could De Jong end up being their marquee signing?
