Both Manchester United and Chelsea find themselves in a similar sort of situation right now, with their teams on the downtrend. The Red Devils are out of the race to qualify for the Champions League and are set to finish their fifth straight season without a trophy. On the other hand, whil the Blues had enjoyed a fantastic start, their campaign has fallen apart and now they seem to be stumbling on their way to a top four, which seemed to be a mere formality not too long ago.

A key area for Manchester United has been their defence. When they signed Raphael Varane in the summer, it was believed that he would come in and solve most of their problems at the back. That has not been the case. Instead, both the French World Cup winner and the club’s backline has struggled throughout the season.

On the other hand, Chelsea’s defence looks much weaker than it did last season and on top of that, they look set to lose Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen in the summer. Thus, a major rebuild is needed at the back.

As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, both Manchester United and Chelsea are monitoring the situation of Pau Torres.

Both Manchester United and Chelsea are interested in Torres

Torres has enjoyed a very good campaign as Villarreal managed to make it to the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they were knocked out by Liverpool. Their deep run does deserve a lot of credit though and Torres played a key role.

Torres was heavily linked with Manchester United last summer as well before they signed Varane from Real Madrid.

Now, it looks like the Spain international is right back on their radar as the futures of the likes of Eric Bailly, Harry Maguire, Phil Jones and others are up in the air. It won’t be easy to get a deal done for Torres though as Chelsea also seem to be in the running for his signature.
