It is safe to say that Cristiano Ronaldo’s blockbuster return to Manchester United has not gone as he, the club or the fans would have expected. Back then, the Red Devils were considered as one of the favourites for the Premier League title. They had finished second last season and had signed the Portuguese superstar as well as Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton in the summer transfer window.

Instead, Manchester United’s season has completely collapsed and they are not even going to finish in the top four and their place in the Europa League is not secure either, and will depend on how West Ham United finish their season. Also, this is the Red Devils’ fifth straight season without a piece of silverware.

Individually, Ronaldo has put up some decent numbers in terms of goals but on numerous occasions, he has not looked up to the mark and many have questioned whether his arrival has been one of the reasons behind Manchester United’s struggles in what had once looked like such a promising season.

Erik ten Hag is set to arrive as the club’s new manager this summer and Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford is pretty much up in the air at this point of time.

Cristiano Ronaldo has discussed Manchester United future with Sir Alex Ferguson

As reported by Mirror, Ronaldo has discussed his Manchester United future with Sir Alex in a series of private meetings. It is believed that the legendary manager would want the Portuguese superstar to stay at the club for at least another season.

A lot of that could end up depending on Ten Hag and what he wants to do, and where Ronaldo fits into his vision though.

If Manchester United are to get back to winning ways, they will need to give the Dutch manager the freedom to rebuild the squad in his own vision and if that means parting ways with Ronaldo, they cannot be afraid of it.
