When Manchester United signed Raphael Varane last summer from Real Madrid, there were high hopes that the French World Cup winner would come in and transform the Red Devils’ backline into one of the best in the Premier League. The reality has been very different though as the club have continued to struggle at the back and the Frenchman has been nowhere near as good as many expected him to be.

As a result, it looks like the club could have to strengthen at the back once again in the upcoming summer transfer window, especially with Harry Maguire going through arguably the worst run of form of his career at the moment.

Pau Torres is someone that Manchester United had been linked with last summer as well although they did not end up making a move for the Spanish international ultimately. But now, it looks like the club might have reignited their interest in the Villarreal centre-back.

As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United and Manchester United are both interested in Torres and Chelsea have also sent scouts to watch him. He is believed to have a release clause in the region of €55-60 million, which will be valid this summer.

Manchester United linked with a move for Torres once again

Manchester United were heavily linked with a move for Torres last summer before they ended up signing Varane. And in hindsight, many might question whether that was the right move on their part.

Varane has not got it going at Manchester United till now and has struggled, as have those around him in the backline. On the other hand, Torres has been an instrumental part behind Villarreal making it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League against all odds, beating the likes of Juventus and Bayern Munich.

The 25-year-old Spanish international has been one of the most highly-rated defenders in La Liga for a while now. It remains to be seen if the Red Devils do end up making a move this time though.
