Manchester United’s hopes of finishing in the top four of the Premier League received a massive boost after a Cristiano Ronaldo hattrick handed them a 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur. It was a 6-pointer of a game with both clubs looking to finish the season in the Champions League qualification spots. And Ralf Rangnick’s side came out on top this time around.

There is still a long way to go though before Manchester United can break into the top four once again. Not only will they have to go on a good run until the end of the season, but they also have to hope that the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea slip up.

The Red Devils have a lot of big name players who need to step over the coming weeks and months. Not just for the Premier League, but the Champions League as well, with Manchester United heading into their second leg against Atletico Madrid, of the round of 16 tie. The first leg had finished 1-1 away at Wanda Metropolitano.

Ralf Rangnick has named six players who he believes are the engines of this Manchester United team. As reported by GOAL, the interim manager said:

"“Cristiano is an important player, of course.“With his reputation and with the way he can still play, he has influence on the team, for sure.“But there are also other players in the team who have to take responsibility, who have to perform, who can be leaders of the team.“He can be a leader with a performance like today. This is what I’ve been telling him since I arrived, that with a performance like today he can be one of the engines of the team.“But we have quite a few other players who can do the same, including Fred, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, whoever.“Even Edi [Edinson Cavani], when he came on the last 10 or 15 minutes, showed how important and what kind of role he can still play for the team.”"

There is no question about the fact that Manchester United have one of the most high-profile squads in the world right now. Unfortunately, that has not translated onto the pitch and the club have been mostly underwhelming.

A lot of changes are expected in the summer, but before that, the Red Devils have to make sure that they finish the ongoing season strong, and hopefully qualify for next season’s Champions League, whether that is by finishing in the top four or winning the competition.

For either of those to happen, players like Ronaldo, Fred, Maguire, Varane, Lindelof and Cavani need to step up to the plate and deliver.
