Donny van de Beek had arrived at Manchester United with a lot of expectations riding on him. The Dutch star was an absolute standout during his time at Ajax and many believed that he was ready to make his mark in the Premier League. Since then, things have not quite gone his way though, as the midfielder struggled for minutes at Old Trafford, first under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then Ralf Rangnick.

As a result, many believed that it was the right decision when Van de Beek was sent out on loan to Everton. There, he was expected to get regular first-team minutes as well as the opportunity to work with Frank Lampard, one of the best midfielders in the history of the game.

Van de Beek has not made a brilliant start at Everton either though, as the Merseyside club have continued to struggle despite Lampard’s arrival as manager in January.

Jamie Carragher does not appear to have been too impressed with Van de Beek at Everton. As reported by the Mirror, the Liverpool legend told Sky Sports:

"“The lack of athleticism in that Everton team is frightening.“When you look at midfield, Allan can’t run, Donny van de Beek’s come in, he can’t run. None of the back four can run.”"

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Van de Beek has failed to register a goal or an assist in 5 appearances for Everton till now.

Output had been a problem for Van de Beek at Manchester United and if his spell at Everton does not turn out to be a success either, one has to raise serious questions about whether the Dutch midfielder can ever make his mark in the Premier League.

Van de Beek has already been linked with a move away from England several times in the past and his long-term future at Manchester United might depend on what the club’s next permanent manager thinks of him, and his chances of being a feature in the first-team.
