It is safe to say that Manchester United were the underdogs going into the game against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. While one side are sitting at the top of the Premier League table and and have dominated domestic competitions for a while, the other finds themselves in a tight race to even finish in the top four. Thus, the contrast between the two clubs is clear for all to see right now.

Still, considering the recent history of the Manchester Derby, many fans of the Red Devils might have hoped for a positive performance on the day.

That was not to be though. It was a disappointing performance in all departments from Manchester United to say the least and they were handed a 4-1 defeat by their cross-town rivals. And it could have been even more.

Roy Keane believes that some Manchester United players even gave up against Guardiola’s side. As reported by the Irish Examiner, the club legend said on Sky Sports:

"“I think the worst thing you can say about United is they gave up.“For a player, in a derby, in any game, to give up, is unforgivable.“The second half, the beauty of top-level sport, there’s no hiding place. We saw all the United shortcomings today.“We’ve all lost football matches but the way that united lost it today. They stopped running, they gave up.”"

It is safe to say that Manchester United are not going through a great run of form at this point of time. But even then, they have been able to get some positive results in recent weeks.

This 4-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City was a huge blow for the Red Devils. Jadon Sancho had brought them level early on in the game but after that, it was an one-sided game to say the least.

Can Manchester United get anything out of this season? That will be a tremendously difficult task to say the least. But anything can happen in football. Let’s see how things turn out over the next few months.

If they are to finish in the top four, one of either Chelsea or Arsenal, will have to go on a bad run of form.
