Things started to go south for Manchester United from the moment when Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, after leading the club to his 13th Premier League title. Since then, the Red Devils have never been able to reach the top of English football ever again. In fact, they have not even been regular in finishing in the top four of the English top flight and look set to go trophyless for the fifth straight season, unless they end up winning the Champions League.

It is safe to say that the situation is far from ideal for the club. Ralf Rangnick is the interim manager till the end of the season and after he takes a consultancy role, Manchester United are expected to make a permanent appointment.

One name that has been most heavily linked with the Manchester United job is that of Mauricio Pochettino. He is believed to be a particular favourite of Sir Alex.

But as reported by ESPN, Sir Alex has recommended Manchester United to consider Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti as a potential option if Pochettino rules himself out of the running for the Old Trafford job.

There is very little doubt about the fact that Ancelotti is one of the best managers in the history of football. He has been a major success at clubs like AC Milan, Chelsea, Real Madrid, PSG and others over the years.

But at this stage of his career, one has to wonder whether he is the right fit for Manchester United.

Ancelotti is currently the manager of Real Madrid, where he is doing a good job and has them sitting at the top of the La Liga table. But there are question marks over his future at the Santiago Bernabeu, as the club have not impressed in Europe.
