Manchester United’s defence has not been great through the course of the 2021/22 season so far. Despite signing Raphael Varane from Real Madrid in the summer, we have not seen much improvement at the back when compared to last season. The Red Devils have conceded 34 goals from 27 Premier League games till now, which is the joint-most of the top 8 alongside West Ham United.

And that tally could’ve been much bigger if Manchester United did not have David de Gea standing between the posts.

Ultimately though, it is not good enough for a club that had title aspirations coming into the season. Hence, it would not be a surprise if Manchester United tried to sign another centre-back next summer. Plus, there are doubts over the long-term Old Trafford futures of Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof.

And it appears that they have set their eyes on AS Monaco’s Benoit Badiashile again, who the Red Devils are believed to have tried to sign in the summer of 2020 and had a £22 million transfer bid turned down.

Manchester United linked with AS Monaco’s Badiashile

As reported by The Sun, Manchester United could have to shell out at least a £40 million transfer fee to regain pole position in the race for Badiashile . West Ham United and Newcastle United are also interested in the 20-year-old centre-back.

Thus, there could be stiff competition for Badiashile next summer, with the defender’s current deal with AS Monaco believed to run till the summer of 2024.

Despite starting the season well, Badiashile has struggled a lot with his hamstring lately. But there is no question about the Frenchman’s talent or potential and he is rated very highly by clubs around Europe. Thus, if Manchester United are able to sign him in the future, it would be considered as a major coup on the part of the Red Devils.
