Goalkeeping might very well be Manchester United’s strongest point right now. David de Gea has been sensational and looks very much back to his best at the moment. Till now, the Spaniard has been the club’s Player of the Season, and with how things are going, it might stay that way. It is hard to imagine that last summer, most had thought that his time at Old Trafford was set to come to an end.

De Gea had struggled massively over the last couple of seasons and Dean Henderson had moved ahead of him in the pecking order, in the second half of the 2020/21 campaign.

As a result, the belief was that Henderson was the long-term goalkeeper for Manchester United while De Gea would be shown the exit door. The tables have turned this season though.

Now, it looks like Henderson is the one who is on his way out of Old Trafford. The Englishman was linked with a move away in January itself, and although that might not have transpired, a summer exit looks almost certain. Manchester United will need to find a replacement though.

As reported by 90min, Manchester United are showing an interest in Sam Johnstone, as they prepare to let Henderson leave in the summer.

Johnstone had come through the academy at Manchester United and spent several years in the senior side, without ever being able to establish himself in the first-team and spending several spells out on loan.

If he was to come back now, he would most definitely be expected to play the role of a back-up to De Gea, who is undroppable on current form.

There is interest from other clubs as well though as the likes of Southampton, Crystal Palace, West Ham United and Rangers have been liked with Johnstone.
