Manchester United are going through a disappointing campaign right now. They suffered early round eliminations in both the League Cup and the FA Cup, and are in the middle of a tight race to finish in the top four of the Premier League along with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham United, Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur. But there is one competition that the Red Devils have not disappointed in though.
That is of course the Champions League. Despite their positive 2020/21 campaign, when they finished 2nd in the Premier League, Manchester United were knocked out of the group stage in the Champions League.
Despite their disappointing domestic form this season, they were able to make it to the knockout phase of the Champions League. And at this point of time, are in a very good spot in their Round of 16 tie against Atletico Madrid.
In the first leg, away from home against Diego Simeone’s side, Manchester United were able to get a 1-1 draw. It means that the Red Devils are in the driver’s seat in the tie, with the second leg set to be played at Old Trafford.
Can Manchester United win the Champions League?
If Manchester United are able to get past Atletico Madrid in the Round of 16, they will make the quarter-finals of the Champions League after a long time.
Now, at first glance, not many will feel that Manchester United have enough to win the Champions League this season. But then, at the same time, there are certain things which could play in their favour as the season progresses.
Are the Red Devils the favourites to win the Champions League from here on? No. But are there reasons that they could be able to pull it off this season, despite a disappointing domestic campaign? Yes, there definitely are a few.
