On paper, Manchester United have one of the best squads in the world and before the start of the season, a lot of people expected them to be competing for the Premier League title as well as other trophies. Unfortunately for the Red Devils, it has not happened. In fact, they have not come even close and it looks like the club might very well be headed towards their fifth straight trophyless campaign.
They suffered early round knockouts in both the FA Cup and the League Cup, and are competing for a top four finish with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Wolves right now.
One competition that they still have a chance of winning though is the UEFA Champions League. They have made it to the knockout phase and will face Atletico Madrid in the Round of 16.
Diego Simeone is not taking Manchester United lightly at all. Surprisingly, he has named Scott McTominay as one of the best midfielders in the world. As reported by the Mirror, the Atletico Madrid manager said:
"“They have an incredible midfield.”"
"“Pogba and McTominay are two of the best midfielders in the world with a great balance.”"
Simeone makes interesting claim about Manchester United star
Interestingly, midfield has been considered as one of Manchester United’s biggest weaknesses and an area that they need to improve in moving forward.
Individually, McTominay has put in some very good performances recently. But at the same time, there have also been times when he has struggled to make his mark on a game.
This has been a case with McTominay for quite some time though. While there is no question about his talent or potential, he has struggled to find the consistency needed to be considered as a undisputed starter for Manchester United.
As a result, if the club were to sign another midfielder, McTominay is one of those players whose place in the starting XI might be put in doubt.
