It is easy to forget but at one point of time, Manchester United were being considered as genuine contenders for the Premier League title. The club had shown a steady improvement under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the years, and had finished second last time around. And after the additions that they made to their squad in the summer, hopes were high understandably.

Manchester United had finished four seasons without a single piece of silverware and must have been desperate to bring an end to that run as soon as possible.

As a result, the club signed a trio of superstars this summer. Jadon Sancho finally arrived from Borussia Dortmund after years of links and rumours. Raphael Varane was signed from Real Madrid, almost surprisingly. And Cristiano Ronaldo completed an incredible return to the Theatre of Dreams, after more than a decade away.

Thus, things were looking up at that point of time for sure. But since then, it has not been a great run on the part of Manchester United.

At this point of time, it does feel like Manchester United’s run without winning any silverware will continue and they are headed towards their fifth straight trophyless campaign.

It is safe to say that that is far from ideal for the Red Devils. They are already out of the League Cup and the FA Cup, both being early round eliminations as well. Their hopes of winning the Premier League are as good as over as well, and a fourth place finish would be considered a success at this point.

The Champions League looks like their only remaining shot at winning a trophy this season but then, chances of that happening are very slim, especially considering how this team has looked in recent times. Anything is possible though, if some of their superstar signings step up to the plate.
