Manchester United have continued to be vulnerable at the back this season despite signing Raphael Varane from Real Madrid last summer. There has been very little improvement in defence and they continue to be one of the leakiest defensive teams in the top half of the Premier League table. And the numbers could have been much worse if not for the presence of one man, David de Gea.

The Spaniard has single-handedly saved the Red Devils several times in the ongoing season. His superb form with the gloves has seen him win back his place in the starting XI and he is firmly ahead of Dean Henderson in the pecking order right now.

Many around the club appear to believe that De Gea is back to his best and for good reason and the Spanish goalkeeper might be set to be rewarded for his brilliant form.

As reported by The Sun, Manchester United looks set to offer De Gea a new contract. And the Spaniard should expect to pick up something close to his current £375,000-a-week wages while also having a longer deal on his hands.

De Gea’s current deal at Manchester United runs out in the summer of 2023 although the club are believed to have the option of extending it by a year.

On the other hand, a new deal for the Spaniard would mean that the writing is pretty much on the wall for Henderson, who is already expected to depart Old Trafford next summer.

Going into the season, it was believed that De Gea’s time at Manchester United was coming to an end. In fact, many fans were disappointed that the Red Devils had not been able to find him a new club over the summer. It is safe to say that things look very different now.
