Midfield has been viewed as a weakness for Manchester United for a long time now. The club were expected to strengthen in the middle of the park in the previous summer transfer window but did not end up doing so, although they did sign the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane. In hindsight though, the Red Devils should have brought in a midfielder as well.

Things have not gone Manchester United’s way this season. Although both Fred and Scott McTominay have put in some impressive performances recently, there are big question marks over their consistency.

And the futures of Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek and Nemanja Matic are all up in the air. As a result, Manchester United would be expected to add to their midfield ranks in the near future.

As reported by Sky Sports, Lyon’s Bruno Guimaraes has been watched closely by Manchester United. But now, it appears that the club have lost out in the transfer race for the Brazilian midfielder.

Manchester United have lost Guimaraes transfer race to Newcastle

Earlier, it had emerged that Newcastle United had submitted a transfer bid around €40 million for the Lyon star and now, as tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, the deal has been accepted and Guimaraes is set to join The Magpies.

Guimaraes is 24 years of age and has been a standout performer in Ligue 1 for Lyon in recent times and has also featured on a few occasions for the Brazilian national team till now as well.

Thus, if Manchester United were able to sign him, he would potentially have been a solid addition for the club But now, it does not look like that will happen as Guimaraes is set to join Newcastle United instead. On the other hand, the Red Devils’ search for a midfielder will continue.
