When Manchester United signed Raphael Varane, the feeling was that they had solved their problem at the back. Harry Maguire had been solid in the previous campaign as well and Luke Shaw was coming off of his best season, and had been one of the best left-backs in the world during that period of time.

Thus, there were hopes that Manchester United had the potential to form one of the best defences in the Premier League.

That has not been the case though and surprisingly, it is Victor Lindelof who has stepped up to the plate and has been the club’s best defender this season.

As a result, even when both Varane and Maguire are fit and available, Ralf Rangnick must stick with the Swede in the heart of his defence because he has been the Red Devils’ most consistent player there through the course of the current campaign.

Fred

This one will be a controversial choice for sure because Fred has had his fair share of critics for the entirety of his Manchester United career.

In fact, in the summer, Manchester United were expected to sign another midfielder and many believed that Fred would be the one to drop out of the starting XI.

Now, like most seasons, Fred’s form has blown a bit hot and cold. But one cannot deny the fact that he has arguably been the club’s best midfielder this season.

At times, he has even looked like a difference maker, which we have not seen from him much in the past. And in a season when most of the players have underwhelmed and underperformed, Fred must be commended for his displays.

Manchester United are still expected to sign another midfielder in the near future but this time around, Fred might remain in the starting XI even if they do.
