Overall, Manchester United have underachieved this season and by quite some margin. Coming into the campaign, most people expected them to put up a Premier League title challenge but that has not been the case. After a promising first few weeks, the club have struggled and at this point of time, they find themselves sitting at seventh in the table.

This, of course, is a direct result of several of their top players underperforming. The likes of Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Edinson Cavani and others, have struggled to recapture their form from the previous campaign.

On the other hand, new signings like Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane have not had the impact that one would have expected when they arrived. Even Cristiano Ronaldo’s form has blown hot and cold, especially in the league.

But that does not mean that there are no players who have stepped up to the plate and done better than what most people would have expected at the start of the campaign.

For someone who was once considered the best goalkeeper in the world, David de Gea did have a few very disappointing seasons despite being in the prime years of his career at that point of time.

And last season, with Dean Henderson moving ahead of him in the pecking order, it had looked like the Spaniard’s time at Manchester United was coming to an end.

He did end up staying though and that has proven fortunate for Manchester United because De Gea has been nothing short of superb this time around. The Spaniard is back to his best and has kept the Red Devils in games on his own at times.
