Manchester United suffer Antonio Rudiger transfer blow

Manchester United could do with another centre-back. The club had signed Raphael Varane in the summer from Real Madrid and hopes were that he would transform their defence into one of the best in the Premier League. It is safe to say that that has not happened. The French World Cup winner has had his own injury troubles while questions have been raised about Harry Maguire’s form as well.

Amidst all this, Victor Lindelof has stepped up to the plate, which is a great sign. But, it would not be a bad idea on the part of Manchester United to make a move for another top centre-back next summer, especially with the futures of Phil Jones and Eric Bailly up in the air.

In that respect, Antonio Rudiger is the perfect candidate. He has been one of the best defenders in the world since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel as Chelsea manager and played a huge part in their Champion League winning campaign.

Rudiger’s current deal with Chelsea is set to run out next summer as well, which has led to him being linked with clubs like Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and others. Manchester United are one of the clubs also believed to have an interest in the German international.

It had looked like Rudiger was destined to depart Stamford Bridge at the end of his current deal. But as reported by The Telegraph, he is ready to listen to a new Chelsea contract offer.

It is not hard to see why Chelsea would be interested in keeping hold of Rudiger, who has been one of their best players over the past year or so.

On the other hand, he would have been a solid signing for Manchester United but now, it looks like the race for his signature has become much more difficult.
