Manchester United are not expected to make a huge splash in the January transfer window. And it is not hard to understand why. On one hand, they had a huge summer transfer window, bringing in Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton to the club. On the other hand, they do not have a long-term manager in place, with Ralf Rangnick only the interim manager till the end of the season.

But that does not mean that there are not players available for comparatively lower transfer fees, who could prove to be good targets for Manchester United.

Julian Alvarez is one such player. He has had a magnificent season with River Plate. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 18 goals and provided 7 assists in 21 league appearances for the Argentine side.

And it looks like Manchester United are very close to signing Alvarez and are prepared to pay his release clause. Pedro Almeida tweeted out regarding the matter:

Manchester United are very close to signing Alvarez

It is safe to say that Alvarez has been an absolute standout in recent times and is one of the most exciting young talents in the world.

Still just 21 years of age, the sky seems to be the limit for the Argentine star. And it is not hard to see why almost every top European club has been linked with him recently.

Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus and several other teams have been linked with Alvarez but it is looking like Manchester United are the team who are closest at the moment.

He is believed to have a release clause around £17 million, which would not be very high in the modern footballing transfer market, when you consider the potential that Alvarez has. Will he end up at Manchester United? Let’s see what the future holds.
