In recent weeks, Fred has put in quite a few impressive performances and earned praise. Amidst all that, McTominay had gotten a bit lost in the mix.

It is safe to say that against Burnley, he was very much in the middle of the spotlight and he shined very brightly.

He opened the scoring early on to ease the nerves for Manchester United, who were coming off of a disappointing result against Newcastle United and knew they needed to win this one. And then, he was instrumental in Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal as well.

McTominay was at his effective best on this occasion and it must have been a massive boost for the player as well as the manager.

With Manchester United continuously being linked with one midfielder or the other, it is safe to say that McTominay will need to put in more of these performances if he is nail down his spot in the club’s first-team.

Manchester United need to use this result

This has been a stop start season for Manchester United to say the least. There have been many occasions when it has appeared that they have put their bad results behind them, only to struggle once again later.

They cannot continue doing that if they are to get anything out of this season. The draw against Newcastle United was a massive blow for them as it looked like they were on the downturn again, but this win against Burnley has come as a huge boost.

Now, they need to use this as a platform to go on a big run and break into the top four of the Premier League.

At this point of time, it feels very unlikely that they will be able to challenge for the Premier League title, as was expected at the start of the season. But finishing in the top four should at least be the target.
