After struggling between the posts for a few seasons, David de Gea has once again come into his own for Manchester United. Not too long ago, it had looked like he was on his way out of Old Trafford, after Dean Henderson had moved ahead of him in the pecking order in the second half of last season. The Spaniard has completely turned it around in this campaign though and looks back to his very best.
As a result, there is no question about who the first-choice goalkeeper at Old Trafford is right now. On the other hand, it might be Henderson who is headed out of the club in the near future, after struggling to get playing time this season.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Henderson but Manchester United might have potential successors to De Gea picked out already.
Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez appears to someone that the club have their eyes on. As reported by the Daily Star, De Gea has a contract until the summer of 2023 and only if he uprooted before then would Manchester United make a £50 million swoop for the Argentine goalkeeper.
Manchester United could make Martinez move
Martinez’s rise has been meteoric to say the least. He spent almost a decade at Arsenal but could never break into their first-team until Bernd Leno picked up an injury a couple of seasons back.
He came into Arsenal’s first-team after that and did a tremendous job but the club decided to let him join Aston Villa not too long afterwards. In hindsight, it was a massive mistake on their part. Martinez has gone on to establish himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and played a huge part in Argentina’s Copa America triumph in the summer.
If Manchester United were able to sign him, it would be considered as a major coup. But, it looks like it will all depend on De Gea’s situation.
