Frenkie de Jong has recently been linked with a potential move to Manchester United. The rumour has come almost out of the blue as the Dutch midfielder is considered a huge part of Barcelona’s future as they look to rebuild the club. At this point of time, the Spanish giants are going through a very difficult season. They are already out of the Champions League and sit at 8th in the La Liga tablle.
It is safe to say that the situation is far from ideal for them. Could Manchester United try to sign one of their most talented players in the form of De Jong amidst all this?
De Jong would certainly be a brilliant addition to the Red Devils’ midfield, an area that they need to strengthen in.
But as tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have not opened any talks to sign De Jong from Barcelona in January despite rumours and there is still quiet around the midfielder now.
Could Manchester United try to sign De Jong from Barcelona?
De Jong first rose to prominence during Ajax’s unexpected run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals a few years ago. Barcelona signed him after that and he has been a regular member of their first-team ever since.
But as we all know, things have not been going smoothly for the Spanish side in recent years. As a result, De Jong does not find himself being mentioned as one of the best midfielders in the world right now although he does have the potential to be in that conversation one day. It is easy to forget that he is still just 24 years of age.
De Jong would be a spectacular signing for Manchester United, or for most clubs around Europe for that matter, but it is not going to be easy to sign him from Barcelona.
