This was a Champions League draw to remember for Manchester United. Originally they had been handed a very tough tie against Paris Saint-Germain. And it is safe to say that it was not ideal for the Red Devils to play against the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Angel Di Maria and the rest of their superstars in the last 16 of the competition. But as it emerged, there had been an error during the draw and it had to be redone.

After that Manchester United were drawn against Atletico Madrid. And that is not an easy tie by any stretch of the imagination either.

Diego Simeone’s side have established themselves as one of the most formidable sides in Europe in recent years and are the reigning La Liga champions. But Manchester United have reasons to be confident as well.

The biggest one is the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo in their squad. Between 2014 and 2019, every time Atletico Madrid were knocked out of the Champions League, it was at the hands of a team consisting of the Portuguese legend. The Spanish giants are one of his favourite sides to face and he has scored more goals against them than any other team except Sevilla.

Manchester United have huge advantage over Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid’s recent form will encourage Manchester United as well. They have not made a great start to the defence of their La Liga title and currently sit at fourth in the points table.

Their run in the Champions League has not been great either. While they made it to the knockout phase, they finished 11 points behind Liverpool, as Jurgen Klopp’s side beat them on both occasions. Simeone’s side finished the group stage with 7 points, with two wins and a draw, while losing thrice.

Thus, the tie against Atletico Madrid might possibly be a tight one but Manchester United should be confident of their chances going into it.
