The defence kept a clean sheet

Manchester United have had a number of worries this season. But if there is one which has been the biggest, it has most probably been their defence.

When Raphael Varane was signed from Real Madrid in the summer, many believed that it could transform their backline and make them one of the best defensive teams in the Premier League. It is safe to say that that has not happened.

Varane has had his fair share of injury problems. On the other hand, several of the other Manchester United defenders have struggled with form as well as fitness.

In Ralf Rangnick’s first game in charge, he named a backline consisting of Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire and Alex Telles. It is safe to say that that combination has not played together often if at all.

But on this occasion, they did tremendously well and kept a clean sheet, which has been rare for Manchester United this season.

This is a very promising start to Rangnick’s stint and fans would be hoping that under the German manager, the Red Devils’ defence is solidified.

Manchester United grinded out a result

Great performances are well and good but at times, what big teams need is the ability to grind out results.

On this occasion, Manchester United showed that. While they looked very good, for a large part of the game, it was looking like they were not going to find a goal and Rangnick’s first game at Old Trafford was gonna end in a draw.

Ultimately, a moment of inspiration from Fred meant that they broke the deadlock and got their goal.

While the Red Devils will be hoping to win games much more convincingly moving forward, there will also be occasions when they will need to find a way to win. They showed that they have it in their locker on this occasion.
