When Ralf Rangnick was announced as Manchester United’s interim manager till the end of the season, a lot of questions were raised about Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford. The Portuguese superstar has already proven that he is still, at the age of 36, one of the best goalscorers in the world. But it is hard to see him fit in the German manager’s Gegenpressing style of football.

Rangnick’s style is based on intense pressing and winning the ball back from the opposition as soon as possible.

Of course, Ronaldo is not the biggest presser of the ball. But even then, there is no doubt about the fact that he brings a lot to the table. Thus, one of the most interesting things will be to see how Rangnick fits him into his plans.

Judging from Rangnick’s recent comments though, it seems that he is very much open to adapting his style for Ronaldo and was clearly impressed by the Portuguese superstar. As reported ESPN, the Manchester United interim manager said:

"“You always have to adapt your style or your idea of football to the players you have available, not vice versa.“Having seen Cristiano yesterday in the second half at the age of 36, an amazing top professional. At his age, I’ve never seen a player who is still that physically fit. He’s still a player who can easily make the difference.”"

Things have been looking up for Manchester United recently

Since the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, things have been looking up for Manchester United in terms of results and there are hopes that they can get their season back on track quickly.

They got a couple of huge wins, against Villarreal and Arsenal, while drawing away at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea under caretaker manager Michael Carrick, who has decided to leave the club after the last match.

Now, it will be very interesting to see how Manchester United do with Rangnick as their interim manager. He is expected to bring a completely different style of football to the Theatre of Dreams, but one that might fit this current squad. While too early to tell, exciting times might be ahead for the Red Devils in the 2021/22 season.
