There is once again some excitement around Manchester United, with Ralf Rangnick being announced as the club’s interim manager after a disappointing start to the season under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw them slip down to 8th in the Premier League table and they were knocked out of the League Cup early as well. Now, it remains to be seen what the legendary German manager does.
Despite not winning a lot of silverware over the course of his career, Rangnick is certainly held in high regard. He is the one who shaped the idea of Gegenpressing and popularized zonal marking as well. He also influenced the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel, both of whom have enjoyed success in English football already.
But there is no question about the fact that the Manchester United job will be the most high profile of his career and it will be interesting to see how he does.
Bastian Schweinsteiger has certainly backed the German to improve things at Old Trafford. The former Manchester United star tweeted out:
Schweinsteiger predicts Manchester United will close the gap under Rangnick
It is safe to say that Rangnick will have his work cut out for him. At the moment, Manchester United sit at 8th in the Premier League table and are already 12 points off the top.
It is safe to say that that is not an ideal situation to come in for the German, who is expected to remain in the managerial hot seat till the end of the season after which he will take a consultancy role for two years.
On the positive side of things for Rangnick though, there will not be the pressure on him to win the Premier League title. The best Manchester United will be hoping for right now would be to finish in the top four and anything more will be considered a bonus.
