Manchester United handed double blow in manager chase
The 4-1 defeat against Watford last weekend saw Manchester United slip down to 8th in the Premier League table. One has to remember that the club were considered as title contenders coming into the season after signing Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton in the summer. As a result, it was not a surprise when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was shown the Old Trafford exit door after a run of bad form.
Michael Carrick is the caretaker manager now and the club are expected to bring in an interim manager till the end of the season. Although, if the right manager became available, they would be expected to make a long-term appointment sooner than first thought.
Naturally, several managers have been linked with the Manchester United job in recent days. Two of them are Luis Enrique and Julen Lopetegui. But it looks like neither of them are interested in the role.
As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano:
Manchester United handed double blow in managerial chase
It is not hard to see why both Enrique and Lopetegui have been linked with Manchester United. Both of them are two of the most highly-rated managers in world football right now.
Enrique enjoyed a terrific spell at FC Barcelona, even guiding them to a Treble. And after that, he has done a great job as the Spain national team’s manager as well, who look like one of the top international teams once again.
On the other hand, following a disappointing spell at Real Madrid, Lopetegui has done a brilliant job at Sevilla and has them in the middle of a La Liga title race right now, resurrecting his reputation as a manager as a result.
It is important to point out though that Manchester United have been linked with several other managers in recent weeks while it might be wrong to count out Carrick’s chances of getting the interim role if the side continue to impress under him.
