Two players who were a massive part of Zinedine Zidane’s legendary Real Madrid side are Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane. The French manager has shown in the past that he knows how to get the best out of both of them.

Interestingly, Manchester United signed both of them this summer, with Ronaldo arriving from Juventus and Varane from Real Madrid.

It was these two signings, along with that of Jadon Sancho, which were expected to turn the Red Devils into Premier League title contenders.

Things have not gone as expected though. Ronaldo has scored goals but then there are questions about how he has fit into this team. On the other hand, Varane has struggled with fitness issues as the Manchester United defence has struggled.

One would hope that if someone like Zidane came in, it would help both Ronaldo and Varane rediscover their best form and actually transform the Red Devils into title contenders.

History of winning trophies

While Manchester United have shown undeniable progress during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s time as manager, one thing that they have not done is win a trophy.

They came very close last season, finishing second in the Premier League and runners up in the Europa League, but ultimately could not get their hands on silverware. In fact, it has been over four seasons since they last won a trophy, which was during Jose Mourinho’s time as the club’s manager.

Zinedine Zidane has had no problems when it comes to guiding teams to trophies though. Not only did he create history by guiding Real Madrid to three straight Champions League titles, but he won a couple of La Liga titles as well, over his two stints as the Spanish giants’ manager.

Now, it remains to be seen if the Red Devils do end up making a move for Zidane, if they part ways with Solskjaer, which is starting to feel likely after the defeat against Watford.
