Ole Gunnar Solskjaer produced a bit of a surprise when he lined up his Manchester United side in a different formation in the game against Tottenham Hotspur. The Norwegian manager knew that he needed to ring in the changes and he made the right ones on the day.

The formation was quite similar to what Chelsea have used to great success since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel. Three at the back, a couple of wingbacks, two midfielders sitting in a double pivot infront of the defence, an attacking midfielder and two forward players.

On the day, it worked like a treat for Manchester United and one would expect Solskjaer to use it moving forward as well after the 3-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur.

But naturally, there are questions about whether it could work in the long-term. Like everything else, it is safe to say that there are pros and cons to it. After the last couple of weeks though, it might be best to concentrate on the positives.

3 Manchester United players who could benefit from the new formation

Here are three Manchester United players who could benefit the most from the new formation Ole Gunnar Solskjaer used against Tottenham Hotspur:

Edinson Cavani

Edinson Cavani has found it difficult to break into the starting XI since Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival over the summer.

He did start the game against Tottenham Hotspur though and did a brilliant job, finding the back of the net and played a big part in Manchester United’s 3-0 win.

As a result, one would expect him to play more moving forward, especially if Solskjaer decides to stick with this formation featuring two players up front. Thus, do not be surprised if we see a lot more of the partnership between Ronaldo and Cavani in the future. And if Saturday was a sign of things to come, we might be in for a treat.
