One of Manchester United’s biggest problems in recent times has been the defensive midfield position. They have world-class options all over the pitch but that is one area that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad appears to be missing a bit of depth in. Nemanja Matic appears to be the most natural defensive midfielder at the club right now.

The club were expected to make an addition in the middle of the park over the summer transfer window but did not end up doing so. And till now, that has appeared to be a mistake on their part.

One man that they appear to have had on their radar is Paris Saint-Germain’s Idrissa Gueye but they could not get a deal over the line for him.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Manchester United failed to follow up on a deal to sign Gueye. After having various meetings and conversations, the club felt that they were not able to make a firm offer as Matic, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard all ended up staying.

Gueye could have been a solid signing for Manchester United

Gueye could have proven to be a solid signing for Manchester United. Despite the number of additions that Paris Saint-Germain made over the summer, he is doing pretty well with the French giants. Also, he has some solid experience of the Premier League, having played for Aston Villa and Everton in the past.

Gueye had been linked with a move to one of the big six Premier League clubs several times in the past before eventually joining Paris Saint-Germain.

Although he is now 32 years of age, he could have been a very good addition to this squad and it is believed that he would have been open to a move to Manchester United.

At the end of the day, it did not transpire though and the Red Devils’ search for a defensive midfielder looks set to continue.
